CBS’s THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (BELLEZA Y PODER) IS THE
ONLY DAYTIME DRAMA SERIES IN THE U.S. DUBBED DAILY INTO SPANISH BY A SECOND
CAST OF TALENTED HISPANIC ACTORS
October, 2002
Los Angeles, CA CBS
Television’s The Bold and the Beautiful is the only U.S. daytime drama
series, which can be seen in Spanish with secondary audio (SAP) technology.
Every day, members of a second cast of nearly 20 talented Hispanic actors
visit a Burbank dubbing studio where they provide the Spanish voices for
some of daytime TV’s favorite characters.
“Latinos are the
fastest-growing sector of the U.S. population and Hispanic Households are
increasingly a very significant part of the entire television universe,”
says Lucy Johnson, Senior Vice President of Daytime Programming at CBS.
“They are also a very diverse demographic, the majority of whom are
bilingual. We want to attract them to CBS in both languages.”
Since The Bold and the
Beautiful launched its Spanish-language SAP service in May of 2001 on CBS,
other networks and primetime series have followed suit to target the
increasing number of Hispanic television viewers. According to a recent
Nielsen Media Research study, the growth of the 2003 Universe Estimates (U.E.)
was driven largely by U.S. Hispanics, who accounted for 84% of growth in the
Total U.S. Adult 18-34 and Adult 18-49 demographics, Hispanic populations
that grew by 40% and 24%, respectively, compared to 2001. Hispanics now
account for 18% of the U.S. Adult 18-34 television population and 15% of the
U.S. Adult 18-49 television population.
BELLEZA
Y PODER – THE LATINO CAST
At a recent cast photo shoot the Latino voiceover actors met with some of
their counterparts and exchanged notes on playing their parts in Spanish.
“I watch and try to emulate your mannerisms when I speak your lines in
Spanish,” says Isidro Olace to Joseph Mascolo, who plays the character of
Massimo on the series. “Its not just saying the lines in Spanish,” says
Leonardo Araujo, who voices the character of Ridge, played by Ronn Moss.
“You have to really act the part in order for your voice to be believable.”
The Bold and The Beautiful
revolves around two design houses in Los Angeles, who battle for supremacy
in the competitive world of fashion, The established Forrester clan and the
scrappy Spectra organization, led by Sally Spectra, who recently
orchestrated the defection of Ridge Forrester from his father’s business to
Spectra. The Forrester family deals with the betrayal of one of its sons
and the ongoing machinations against them.
The series uses a
complete second cast to voice the primary cast without resorting to any
“doubling up” of characters. “We feel that each character is unique and
must have a different voice over actor to achieve an absolute individuality
and believability in Spanish,” says series Senior Producer Ron Weaver.
The Latino cast of
voiceover actors includes, Erika Robledo as Amber; Marcela Bordes as
Bridget; Nathalia Hencker as Brooke; Guillermo Diaz as Clarke; Ulises Cuadra
as Deacon; Carlos Stevenson as Eric; Isidro Olace as Massimo; Rocio Gallegos
as Megan; Leonardo Araujo as Ridge; Humberto Amor as Rick; Gloria Santacruz
as Sally; Consuelo Sedano as Stephanie; Juan Baltazar as Thorne; Gabriela
DeMarco as Darla; Gonzalo Suarez as C.J.; Gerardo Prat as Dr. McLaine and
Gladys Parra as Tricia.
Celebrating fifteen years
on the air in 2002, The Bold and the Beautiful enjoys unparalleled success
all over the world. With over 3,800 episodes produced, the show has
remained the most watched drama series in the world for over a decade, with
daily original episodes airing in over 40 languages throughout 100
countries. In the U.S., The Bold and the Beautiful airs on CBS, the
number-one rated network in daytime television for more than 12 consecutive
years.
